Seniors of the United Class of 2020:
I know that we have already published plans for a Virtual Commencement Ceremony and Drive-in Diploma Pick-up, but now that the Governor has moved some counties into the GREEN PHASE, our hopes are high that we may soon be able to honor our Seniors with a traditional in-person Commencement Ceremony at our Football Field, in the very near future. We anticipate that the Governor may announce, as early as this Friday, that Indiana County moves to GREEN on June 5, 2020. If so, the Class of 2020 will be recognized, in person, on that evening with the ceremony to begin at 7:00pm.
We will still be hosting a Virtual Ceremony Honoring our Seniors (not a commencement ceremony anymore) on Thursday, June 4th at 7:00pm. At this Ceremony, scholarship awardees will be announced and all Seniors will be recognized in the Class of 2020 Senior Video. This event will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network. If you haven’t already signed up to tune in, please follow these directions:
- Go to https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/users/sign_up
- Type in your name, email address, and a password
- On June 4th at 7:00pm (or before) search for United High School in the search bar.
- Enjoy the Ceremony!
Once you have a NFHSNetwork.com account, this is the direct link to watch the Ceremony:
I encourage you to share this link with your many friends and extended family members so that they can honor you along with us.
If we are in the GREEN PHASE on June 5th, students will practice on the field at 9:00.
That same evening, Commencement Exercises will be conducted at 7:00pm. Tickets and seating will be limited, as we must continue to abide by the CDC’s social distancing guidelines. Tickets will be distributed during material return on June 1st or at practice on the 5th.
Commencement Exercises will include student and guest speakers, the distribution of diplomas to each graduate, and the singing of the Alma Mater. This traditional ceremony is intended to honor our Seniors of the Class of 2020 in a similar fashion to those alumni who have done so before them.
The bleachers on both sides of the stadium will be used for family and friends with tickets. Seats will be marked six feet apart from one another. In order to maximize the space for attendees, additional field seating will be set up on the field near the concession stand for family and friends with tickets. We encourage individuals who are considered to be high-risk to wear a face covering. Students will be seated at the opposite end of the field near the flagpole.
In the event of weather postponement, we will plan Commencement for the following day – Saturday, June 6th, and additional details will follow.
If we are not in the GREEN PHASE by June 5th, we anticipate that our county should be moving in that direction soon after that. As soon as the Governor announces that we are moving to GREEN, we will be holding our Commencement Ceremony to honor the Class of 2020, a class that, like no other, has been resilient in the face of unparalleled adversity.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed so that we can properly honor our Seniors with a traditional United High School ceremony as soon as we are able to safely do so. If you have questions about any of the planned graduation activities, please feel free to contact Mr. Atwood or the senior class advisors.
